Renovate the Rink

Since founded, Pittsburgh Commercial Construction has always felt the responsibility to contribute to philanthropic needs within the community.  While we take pride in giving financial support to multiple causes, we wanted to take on a bigger role within a single project.  We knew that we wanted to do something outside of the box but wasn’t quite sure what that looked like.

When becoming the Official Commercial Construction Company of the Pittsburgh Penguins®, the organization understood our commitment to the local community.  With their own charitable arm, The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, we were confident that we could partner up to reach the Western Pennsylvania Region in an impactful way.

We began to focus on the local hockey community, their needs, and how our skillset could benefit them.  Through this process Renovate the Rink came to life.  The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was happy to team up with our company on this project and provide one lucky rink within the local area a $100,000 renovation.

We knew that the Pittsburgh Penguins® and The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would be able to lend valuable experience and knowledge in the contest process.  This allowed for us to focus on what we do best: construction management.

Throughout the contest, we had the opportunity to walk through many of the local rinks, meet with the facility managers, and learn about the issues that they face.  We were not aware of the amount of upkeep that goes into these facilities, and that managers must prioritize which needs can be met first.  This of course leads to multiple areas of the rink being neglected.  It is PittComm’s and the Foundation’s hope, that with this prize money, we can help to lessen some of the burden that the rinks feel.

After Renovate the Rink was announced, we had over 400 entries, nominating 16 eligible rinks.  It was a hard task to choose three finalists, but it had to be done!  After much consideration the following rinks were chosen: Hess Ice Rink, Kirk S. Nevin Arena, and The Ice Mine.

We are now in the voting phase and are taken back by the amount of support each rink has garnered within their community.  Our PittComm office is filled with excitement, and we cannot wait to see which rink we will be providing quality service for!

Given our experience with PITTCOMM as both a recipient of their work through the landlord and as a direct customer, I highly recommend their work and staff. They are definitely on my bid list for our next project in any market they serve.
